David Norwood is an independent producer, director and choreographer. He often takes works and strips them down to their essence, only using what is essential to create an intensely intimate, radically humane theatrical experience that is rooted in specificity and emotional truth.
He recently directed the acclaimed the All-Black reimagining of Philip Ridley’s Tender Napalm at HERE Arts Center where the production was hailed as “a contemporary play that will become a classic” by Front Row Center and “ravishing” by Theaterscene. Other recent credits include: A Guide for the Homesick (as Executive Producer), Salome: Da Voodoo Princess of Nawlins (NYIT Award and AUDELCO Award nominations for Best Choreography), Next to Normal and Nevermore in Concert. He has also directed works by Lorraine Hansberry, Tony Kushner, David Mamet, George C. Wolfe and Tennessee Williams.
His career has spanned producing premieres and revivals of plays and musicals, including Out of the Box Theatrics’ award-winning Off-Broadway revival of Baby (as Interim General Manager). David has worked on the general management of acclaimed plays and musicals at the Tony Award-winning offices TT Partners and ShowTown Theatricals. Before that, he was with RCI Theatricals, where he managed the Broadway productions of The Minutes by Tracy Letts (Tony Award Nomination for Best Play), Chicken & Biscuits by Douglas Lyons, and the National Tour of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma! (Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical), where he also worked on the development of new work for the company.
David was a Black Theatre Coalition / Theatre Leadership Project Fellow and was a member of the 2013-2014 SDC Foundation Observership Class. His work has been awarded grants from the Actors’ Equity Foundation and Dramatists Guild Foundation. He studied at The Ailey School and the Joffrey Ballet School and has worked with many esteemed artists such as Camille A. Brown, Jim Kierstead, Tracy Letts, Gregory Mosher, Jeffrey Richards, and many more. He is a proud member of the Broadway League and SDC. He is an alumnus of the Commercial Theatre Institute in New York, and its sister organization, Stage One in London. He holds a B.A. from The City College of New York and an M.A. from Hunter College.
